Special Programs

Inclusion in the general education setting in the neighborhood school is the primary goal for all students in the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD). A special program may be an option after special consideration. The division team, in collaboration with the student’s family, will determine the best school placement option for a student.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education curriculum states the Broad Areas of Learning for all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. They include:

  1. Sense of Self, Community, and Place
  2. Lifelong Learners
  3. Engaged Citizens

These areas serve as a foundation for the development of an individual plan to meet the diverse needs of students. Families are an integral part of the division based team when developing and implementing a student’s individualized plan.  Professionals from outside agencies are also a valuable resource in supporting students success. Student’s program placement is reviewed on an ongoing basis.

The school based team includes School Administrators, Classroom Teachers, and Educational Associates. School based teams and students are supported by professionals from Student Support Services. These professionals include Speech and Language Pathologists, Registered Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapist, School Social Workers and Student Support Services Consultants.

Alternative Education

The Alternative Education Curriculum is an option for students who are unable to meet the learning outcomes of the Secondary Level Regular Education Program, even after the Adaptive Dimension has been applied extensively. The Ministry of Education suggests that the decision to move a student from a Regular Education Program to an Alternative Education Program/curriculum should be based on formal and informal assessment of both academic and cognitive functioning. A student’s educational history must be considered by the team.  Communication with both student and parent /guardian is necessary for the move to an Alternative Education Curricula or program. While all high schools have access to Alternative Education Curricula, Wesmor and Carlton High Schools offer specific classes at the 18, 28 and 38 level.

The Alternative Education program does not meet the current admission requirements for most postsecondary institutions. One Alternative Education credit automatically registers the student in the Alternative Education program. Regular or Modified Education courses may be taken concurrently with the Alternative Education courses. If the student discontinues from the Alternative Education program, he or she must complete all required general education courses in order to graduate with a regular education grade 12.
